Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II Dies at 85
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, yesterday died at the age of 85 in a London hospital after a brief illness. Unconfirmed sources said the monarch, who was said to have been flown out of the country since last Friday, died in the United Kingdom.
Officially, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade was born on January 1, 1930. He became the 50th traditional ruler of the ancient Kingdom of Ife, popularly referred to the cradle and source of the Yoruba, at the age of 50 in 1980, taking the regnal name Alayeluwa Olubuse II. he dropped 'Alayeluwa' from his name few years back, saying that only God is fit to be called "Aleyaluwa" which means (Omniscience)
The late Oba left behind his wives, his first son Prince Tokunbo Sijuwade and several other children. May his soul rest in peace Amen.
